The AHA was founded in 1884 and incorporated by Congress in 1889 to serve the broad field of history. It encompasses every historical period and all American geographical areas.

 

The Foundation operates the world’s largest living history museum in Williamsburg, Virginia, the restored 18th-century capital of Britain’s largest, wealthiest, and most populous outpost in the New World. The 301-acre historic area maintains hundreds of restored, reconstructed, and historically furnished buildings. Costumed interpreters tell the stories of the men and women of the 18th-century city—black, white, and native American, slave, indentured, and free—and the challenges they faced.

 

DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, DC, is a volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children.
